FAQ
PETAL PODS
Where can I find a list of ingredients of your pods?
How many pods do I need and how often?
You should have at least two pod refills per month for every bottle (or sink) in your home (each pod refill will make a full bottle of soap).
Is your product vegan? Do you do any animal testing?
Yes - we are vegan and cruelty free, no animal testing, ever.
Is your hand soap effective? Is it effective against the COVID-19 virus?
Very - in fact, hand soap is more effective than hand sanitizer in reducing the amount of all types of germs and chemicals on hands. (https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/show-me-the-science-hand-sanitizer.html)
How much soap will each pod make?
8.5 ounces (250 ml), about the same amount that you’re used to getting from a traditional single-use plastic bottle of soap. If you’re reusing an existing bottle and using Petal Pods to refill, you can add more than 8 - 9 ounces of water, but please note that more water will start to reduce the soap's effectiveness
What happens to the film from the pod when I mix it with water?
Our pod's film is made from PVOH and completely dissolves in water with no residue.
What scents do you offer?
We currently offer two all-natural scents - lemongrass and citrus ginger. We are working on many more scents to provide a variety of options, including seasonal variants.
Does Petal offer antibacterial soap?
No. Our goal is to offer the most effective, natural, great smelling hand soap possible - while avoiding waste and particularly plastic pollution. Antibacterial soap is not great for your hands as overuse can actually reduce the healthy bacteria on your skin and also remove some of the natural oils which make skin dry. Plus, some antibacterial soap can actually contribute to making bacteria more resistant, defeating the purpose in the long run. Washing with good old fashioned soap and water is really the most effective way to keep your hands clean and free of germs and viruses – and that’s exactly what we designed Petal to do!
My soap gets watery over time and I have to shake the bottle before I pump - what is happening?
If your soap seems watery, it was not mixed properly when the pod was initially added to your bottle. Make sure to use warm water and shake your bottle for a full 60 seconds before you start to dispense soap. This ensures that the pod has completely dissolved and the soap concentrate is completely dissolved in the water.

MAKING PETAL SOAP
Can I make a larger bottle of soap with one pod by adding more than 8.5 ounces of water?
Our formulation is specifically engineered to be diluted into 8.5 ounces of water. More water will start to reduce the soap's effectiveness. For larger volumes, increase the number of pods, ensuring you use at least one pod per 8.5 ounces of water.
How can I easily measure the correct amount of water for each pod?
You should fill the bottle up to the black or white line that is located on the side of your bottle. Don’t worry about getting this exactly right. Just fill your bottle up to that line as closely as you can. Please note that there will be a good bit of air/space left in the bottle. This space is necessary for the foaming pump as well as a little air for mixing the pod and water.
How long do I need to shake the bottle to dissolve the pod and mix the soap?
After you add your pod to 8.5 ounces (250ml) of warm water, please shake your bottle for 60 seconds. It's important that you shake your bottle for 60 seconds to ensure that the pod has completely dissolved and the soap concentrate is completely dispersed throughout the water.

PETAL BOTTLE & PACKAGING
Do I have to use your bottle?
No, any foaming hand soap bottle will work as long as you mix our pods with 8 to 9 ounces of water.
Is your product vegan? Do you do any animal testing?
Yes - we are vegan and cruelty free, no animal testing, ever.
Why do you use a plastic foamer pump?
There are currently no suitable non-plastic alternatives. Our pump is manufactured from PCR (Post Consumer Resin) recycled plastic and is built to last. This is not a single-use pump. The base cap and nozzle are 100% PCR. The pump is 75% PCR.
Can I recycle the soap bottles and soap cans/tins? What about the packaging it was shipped in?
Yes - everything is 100% recyclable. We ship everything in recyclable corrugated cardboard and kraft envelopes padded with shredded paper. You can also reuse our pod tins for many other purposes. Store your medication, paperclips, or various other items.
Should I clean my bottle before refilling it?
Yes - it is a good idea to rinse your bottle completely before making a new bottle of soap. We recommend hand washing your bottle with hot water after mixing 2 - 3 bottles of soap.
Why do you ship your pods in aluminum cans?
Our pods are made from PVOH - a water soluble film. PVOH requires humidity protection during shipping and storage. Most pods like ours are shipped in plastic containers, which produces tons of single-use plastic waste. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable and provides great protection for our pods.
My pump won't move when I press down on it. What's wrong?
Make sure your pump is in the unlocked position. Twist your pump in the direction of the arrow that is printed on its top until the pump won't twist anymore. After you twist the pump, try again and the pump should work normally. Our pumps come with this locking mechanism which will allow you to travel with a full bottle of soap if needed.
Why is nothing is coming out of my pump right after I finish making a bottle of soap?
Continue to push down on your pump until soap starts dispensing. A new pump needs to be primed before first use. This replaces the air inside of the pumping mechanism with your soap.
What should I do if my pump stops working?
A warm water flush will usually get your pump operating properly in no time. Fill a cup with warm water, then unscrew your pump and place its tube in the water. Hold your cup over a sink and pump water until any residue or old soap is flushed through the entire system. After your pump is clean, screw it back on your soap bottle and check to see if foaming soap is flowing through it properly. If this doesn't do the trick, drop us an line at help@withpetal.com!
I have some black smudges or ink on my bottle - what is that?
We use soy ink with our packaging instead of standard inks and unfortunately it can sometimes rub off on our bottles during shipping. To remove the ink, simply rub a damp towel on your bottle and it will come right off!
Will the Petal bottle rust?
No. Never! Our bottles are made from 100% recyclable aluminum and can never rust.
SUSTAINABILITY
What does Zero-waste mean?
Zero Waste is a set of principles focused on waste prevention that encourages the redesign of resource life-cycles so that all products are reused. The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators, or the ocean. (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_waste)
How much plastic pollution is being generated by hand soap bottles?
Personal care bottles have one of the lowest rates of recycling in the US, resulting in over half a billion plastic bottles ending up in landfills and oceans every year. Our goal is to make it easy to stop contributing to this problem.
